Dangers of Air Purifiers

Two very common dangers of air purifiers could expose your family to unnecessary harm. Do you know what these dangers are? Do you know how to avoid them?

Promises. How sweet they are when being made. How bitter when broken.

Air purifier merchandisers promise so great a bounty of benefits. Do they deliver? The answer is clear that not all do. In fact, some do more harm than good.

Consumer Reports magazine once termed the air purifier market a "regulatory black hole". There is no significant governmental oversight of these products. This puts the burden of avoiding fraud and deception squarely on your shoulders.

Fortunately, avoiding the dangers of air purifiers that deceptively represent themselves as healthful is not difficult. There are only two things you need to know about any so called air cleaning device in order to reject it. Does it emit ozone or does it emit ions.

Dangers of Air Purifiers That Emit Ozone

"These [ozone air purifier] machines are insidious," quoting Barbara Riordan, chairperson of the California Air Resources Board (ARB). "Marketed as a strong defense against indoor air pollution, they emit ozone, the same chemical that the ARB and the US EPA have been trying to eliminate from our air for decades. More chilling is that some people susceptible to the ill effects of ozone will eagerly bring these Trojan horses home."

Marketers of ozone generators are fond of referring to ozone as "activated oxygen", "energized oxygen" or "super oxygenated". This is intended to dupe consumers into believing that ozone is healthful. There is no science behind these claims. It is fraud, pure and simple.

Ozone possesses a sweet, after-the-rainstorm smell that deceives people into thinking it is improving their air. Ozone generator marketers know this and use it mercilessly in their "fresh, clean, natural" pitches.

The reality is ozone is an irritant. It inflames and damages lung and respiratory tissue. It increases sensitivity to allergens and other irritants. It produces symptoms such as coughing, chest tightness and shortness of breath. It is especially harmful to asthmatics and persons with pre-existing respiratory problems, as well as the elderly and children. It has been implicated in permanent lung damage, contributing to the onset of asthma and even premature death.

Ozone production is one of the single greatest dangers of air purifiers. Never should anyone purchase a device whose sole function is to produce it, as in the case of ozone generators. However, it is also a serious concern in ionic air cleaners that produce smaller quantities of ozone as a byproduct of their normal operation.

Dangers of Air Purifiers That Emit Ions

Another type of so called "air purifier" is the ion generator, sometimes called a negative ion generator. Air ionizers may be included as an add-on to filter based air cleaners. Often marketed as air cleaners you may also see them promoted as mood enhancers, since presumably negative ions contribute to a peaceful frame of mind. Again, there is no sound science behind these claims, only wishful thinking ate best and outright fraud at worst.

But my main concern is their danger when used as air purifiers.

The logic behind these devices is that ions will attach themselves to airborne particles. These in turn are attracted to one another via "static cling" and after agglomerating together, become too heavy to remain suspended and fall out of the air.

At least in some measure this does occur. Unfortunately this also results in something affectionately (or perhaps not) known as "black wall effect". You see, these statically charged particles tend to stick to surfaces near the air ionizer causing them to become heavily soiled.

The danger of air purifiers like this is that your lungs present a surface for these particles to adhere to. Statically charged lung penetrating particles may well be more inclined to stick around rather than being exhaled. So your lungs become the filter for these air cleaners. This danger has not been studied well enough to establish the degree of risk you may face. After all, who is going to volunteer to let their lungs become a dumping ground for air pollution? But the EPA has considered the risk to be serious enough to warn consumers who may be considering ionizer type air cleaners.

Air purifiers can be a good investment in your long term health and can give relief from allergies. I hope this additional information about potential dangers of air purifiers helps you make a better choice for yourself and family.

Whole House Air Cleaners Report - Why They Do Not Work!

Image : http://www.flickr.com

As you search for that perfect air cleaner to protect your family from dust, pet dander and other airborne allergens, you will run across many different types of air cleaners, air purifiers, air filters and air filtration systems. One of the most interesting and eye catching products on the market is the Whole House HEPA Air Cleaner Filtration System. This report also includes Whole House Air Filters and Whole House Air Purifiers. There are many of them on the market! Unfortunately human nature often kicks into high gear when the wonderful offer of a central whole house air cleaner is advertised as a way of keeping your entire house clean with just one single gizmo! THE FACT IS THESE AIR AIR CLEANING MACHINES JUST CAN'T CLEAN A WHOLE HOUSE!   There are five types of air cleaning products that are advertised to clean a whole house. They are: HEPA air filtration bypass air cleaners  Electronic air cleaners Self-Charging electrostatic air filters Ultraviolet light systems Portable ozone-ionizer air purifiers This report will explain the truth about how each of these products actually operate and what benefits they really do provide for you. Also included are the proper steps to take for a clean indoor air environment.

Myth #1. Whole house HEPA air cleaner / bypass systems - These somewhat expensive systems are flawed in design from the beginning. The idea behind these units is to pull a portion of the air stream from the return side of your furnace or air conditioning system, clean it and then return it into the supply side of the furnace or air conditioning systems ductwork. Most of the time, it involves taking up to 30% of the air from the return ductwork. The air is then cleaned with a high efficiency filter such as a HEPA and/or carbon filter. The cleaned air is then returned into the supply ductwork of the air handling system (bypassing" the air handler unit). Such an air cleaning system under this design poses many areas of failure. First of all, you are assuming that the majority of the airborne contaminants in your living space are drawn into the heating and or cooling system.

However, home heating/air conditioning systems are designed to heat and cool. They are not designed to pull dust, dander and allergens into a HEPA air cleaner from the narrow return ductwork at far distances. Note that the great majority of homes have only one air return per air conditioning system. So without having a means of returning the air from each and every room to the air handler, the overall effectiveness of these HEPA air cleaner systems is nullified. This is because the majority of rooms will not be able to have dirty air pulled from them. So the "whole house" air cleaner will only be able to clean the dirty air that makes it into the return side of the ductwork. This is a very limited amount! Secondly, in order for the HEPA air cleaner to work at all, the fan for the HEPA cleaner and the fan for the air handler unit must run all of the time.

THIS MEANS HIGH ELECTRIC BILLS! Having both blower units running constantly uses significantly more electricity than portable systems located in individual rooms. Lastly, and more importantly, even in an ideal world where the air from all over the house is making it back into the return duct work through multiple air returns, a bypass system is only cleaning up to 30% of the return air because it is only receiving up to 30% of the return air. This means, even if the HEPA air cleaner unit is running at 100% efficiency for all contaminants, only 30% of the entire air going through the return duct work is actually being cleaned. Therefore, when you look at the system as a whole, it is only 30% efficient. Plus the entire air return duct work from the air vents in the rooms to the HEPA air cleaner system will become filthy because the air entering into the return duct work is not being filtered! Also these whole house cleaning systems require expensive pre-filter replacements to protect the even more expensive HEPA filter! The bottom line here is that Central HEPA filtered types that install into air conditioning / furnace systems cannot properly clean the air in an entire house or building!

Myth #2. Whole house electronic cleaner systems (Also Called Electrostatic precipitators) - Electronic systems are made to fit into the air return side of the central air conditioning system or furnace. They can only filter the air that is brought into them from the air return duct or area that leads to the electronic  cleaner unit. These units use electrically charged metal or fiber cells that attract dust particles onto them. Unfortunately this old technology is outdated and it does not work well! This is because after a light amount of dust covers the surface of the charged cell grid, the rest of the incoming dust and allergens will pass right through the air cleaner and back into the indoor environment for people to breathe! Also, Central Electronic Cleaners with Charged Collector Cell Grids Produce Non-Adjustable Levels of Ozone! This can be an irritant to people with asthma and lung problems! Since most homes and buildings have only one central air return per system or zone, these electronic cleaners cannot pull dirty air from rooms or areas that are more then a few feet away from the air return that is attached to or leading to the electronic air cleaner. Major companies that produce these electronic cleaners are Honeywell, Trion and Aprilaire. THERE IS NO WAY that central electronic cleaners can pull the dirty air from across the house or from the inside of bedrooms and or offices that are away from the central air return area in your home or building! They Are Not Whole House Air Cleaners!

Myth #3. Whole house self-charging electrostatic air filters. These air filters are custom made to size to replace your existing throw away air filters in your furnace or central air conditioning systems air handler unit or air return. They are made from multiple layers of poly propylene fiber which allow them to become electrically charged when air flows through them. They can then grab dust and allergens onto them like a magnet. These air filters are durable, washable, reasonably priced and they can last for many years. They are wonderful for keeping your air conditioning or heating system and ductwork clean as they can catch and remove very small particles of dust and allergens from the air in your home or building! However, just like the less effective throw away filters, self charging electrostatic air filters can only clean the air from the air handler unit or from the air return area they are operating from! Self-charging electrostatic air filters cannot pull the dirty air from across the house or from the inside of bedrooms and or offices that are away from the central air return area in your home or building! They Are Not Whole House Air Filters!

Myth #4. Whole house ultra-violet (UV) light systems for central air conditioning units - These ultra-violet light systems are installed into air conditioning systems to kill mold and bacteria. They do not remove dust, particulates or airborne allergens from the A/C system, air ducts or from the indoor environment! These units are supposed to be installed so the ultra-violet lights are shining onto the evaporator coil on the air return intake side to prevent mold and bacteria growth on the evaporator coil and surrounding area, yet many of these units are installed improperly into areas of the air handler or air plenum where they can not do much good. Beware of UV light systems that produce ozone! Many of these UV light systems produce ozone at levels that cannot be controlled! Too much ozone can be an irritant to people with asthma and lung problems! I have experienced ozone producing UV light systems that created so much ozone it burned my eyes and throat.

And I do not have asthma or any lung problems at all! Some of these units are also produced with non-ozone producing UV bulbs. However please note, if an air conditioning system is clean and installed properly and it has a high quality self charging electrostatic or pleated air filter in it to protect the air handler and evaporator coil from dust, the chance of the evaporator coil and the rest of the system becoming contaminated with dirt, mold and bacteria will be greatly reduced. We recommend properly cleaning your air conditioning system and duct work while installing an upgraded quality air filter instead of an ultra-violet light system. Please know that ultra-violet Light units for your air conditioning system are not whole house air cleaners even though people will claim that they will keep your entire home clean!

Myth# 5. Whole house Portable ozone ionizer air purifiers - Some air purifiers include both needle point and radio wave ionizers that can ionize the air in mutable rooms in your home or building. These units produce negative ions that are sent into the air. Negative ions work by attaching themselves to small floating particles in your indoor air forcing the particles to quickly drop out of suspension and then down to the ground or onto any surface below. These purifiers will drop smoke, dust, pollen and animal dander from the floating indoor air environment and down to the surface below to be vacuumed. However if your bedroom is in the area being ionized, floating particles including allergens can drop onto you while sleeping in bed. This can cause problems for those with allergies and asthma. Some of these machines also produce adjustable levels of ozone.

Ozone is that fresh smell that occurs after a thunderstorm when lightning cuts through the oxygen splitting some of the oxygen in the air into ozone. Ozone does a wonderful job of removing all kinds of odors such as smoke odors, musty odors, pet odors, food odors, chemical odors, and body odors. The ozone works by oxidizing the odors. However, since ozone is an oxidizer it can be an irritant to those with asthma and lung disease if turned up to high. So if you or a family member has asthma or lung problems, ozone -ionizer air purifiers are not for you! IF YOU'RE A SMOKER THEY REALLY DO A GREAT JOB OF QUICKLY REMOVING FLOATING CIGARETTE SMOKE, CIGAR SMOKE AND ODORS FROM INDOOR ENVIRONMENTS.

Please remember that these air purifiers do not filter the air and they are not whole house air cleaners even though people often claim that they are! THE ANSWER, What You Can Do For a Clean Indoor Environment As explained above, there is no one single air cleaning system that will keep your entire home or building dust or allergen free. If you have a central air conditioning or furnace system in your home or building and you have the desire to keep it as dust and allergen free as possible, follow the four steps below for a clean and healthy indoor environment.

  1. Keep you ducted air conditioning system or furnace clean and install a quality self charging electrostatic air filter or pleated air filter in the main air return or air handler unit to keep your system clean for the future. If you desire to have your air ducts and air handler unit properly cleaned visit the National Air Duct Cleaners Association at NADCA Dot Com  and interview some of the members in your area so you can choose the right air duct cleaning company that will best fit your needs.

  2. Purchase and place a quality HEPA air cleaner or HEPA air purifier in the most important areas of your home or building that need to be the most dust or allergy free. Most people place HEPA air cleaners or HEPA air purifiers in the bedrooms, family room and office area if there is one. If you have a mold problem in your living space or if you need a unit that will kill and reduce mold bacteria and viruses, make sure you purchase a portable air cleaning unit that includes a non ozone producing ultra-violet light system. When choosing a portable HEPA air cleaner or HEPA air purifier it is important to look for brands and models that are quiet while producing the highest air exchange rate per hour in any given sized room or area, at the lowest aftermarket filter replacement cost. We feel that the highest quality HEPA  units on the market are made by Austin Air, TRACS and EZ Air.

  3. If possible replace all carpeting with ceramic tile or hardwood floors. {Tile is best} New carpeting is loaded with toxic chemicals that will outgas for a period of 2-3 years and old carpeting is often loaded with dust and allergens that include molds, bacteria, dead skin, animal dander and dust mite allergen. All of these problems are major triggers for allergies and asthma! If the carpeting must stay, VACUUM OFTEN! Use a quality HEPA vacuum cleaner that is sealed tight so the fine dust does not blow back into your indoor environment while you are vacuuming. Sweeping ceramic tile or hardwood floors is not the best way to clean as it causes the dust and allergens to fly back into the air. Vacuuming all surfaces with a quality HEPA vacuum cleaner is the best way to go. We feel that the Airstorm HEPA vacuum cleaner is the highest quality HEPA vacuum cleaner on the market.

  4. Un-clutter your living space and keep it Clean. This is very important! Also get rid of all feather pillows and wash all of your bedding in HOT water as least once a week to limit dust and Dust Mite allergen from building up. Dust Mite allergen is very reactive to people with allergies and asthma. It must be reduced as much as possible! If you have pets, do not allow them into your bedrooms to spread their animal dander. Look at your bedrooms as a safe haven to sleep in if you are allergic to your pet dog or cat. If you do have pets and follow these four steps, you will have a much better chance of being able to keep the pets that you love and live with. It is our hope that this report will be helpful to you in creating a healthy, clean, more allergy free indoor environment for your family or workplace employees!

Rib Eye Steak Recipe by the BBQ Pit Boys

The BBQ Pit Boys show you the "tips and tricks" to help you easily serve up the "best steak anywhere", the Rib Eye Steak. What makes the Rib Eye #1 for many? The Rib Eye steak, or ribeye, also known as the Delmonico or Scotch Fillet (Australia), is a beef steak from the small end of the rib roast. When the Rib Eye section of the beef is cut into steaks, it is one of the most popular, tender and juiciest steaks available. This is because the meat from the rib section is tender and fattier or "marbled" more than most other parts of the steer. This extra fat makes Rib Eye steaks and roasts especially tender and flavorful. The Rib Eye steak is usually served bone-in, particularly at high quality steakhouses -the extra moisture and fat alongside the bone enhances the flavor. So get yourself some 1 to 11/2 lb and 11/2"-2" thick Rib Eye steaks --and then go "fire up" that BBQ grill of yours -it's time for some real STEAK On The Barbecue. You can print out this BBQ Pit Boys recipe at www.BBQPitBoys.com ---

Kangen Water - Alkaline Water Ionizers Need Not Cost an Arm and a Leg - Here's What to Look At

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Please consider this a friendly warning. Alkaline water ionizers made by the company Enagic are very overpriced due to the company's fancy marketing structure. This is known as the "Kangen Water Scam" because they call ionized water "kangen water". They sell their Leveluk model for $4,000. Although the ionizer is a high quality unit, the cost is excessive & way too expensive. You can get an excellent ionizer of equal or better quality for half or even less than half. Most of your purchase dollars goes toward sales commissions paid out to multiple levels of people in the Enagic organization. So, if you are looking for a brand new counter top water ionizer to own, I do not recommend purchasing from a company that is set up as a multi-level marketing business.

The good news is that most companies that sell ionizers are not setup as multi-level marketing businesses. In the resource box following this article, I will direct you so you can complete your research and be assured that you will make a great buying decision.

In order to get the best alkaline ionizer for your money, you will want to look for certain things and answer a few specific questions.

How long has the company been around? I truly would recommend staying with a major brand such as KYK, Tyent, Chanson, Jupiter, and possibly a couple of others. There are other small business owners who sell ionizers for under $1000 by importing units from Asia. Unfortunately, from my experience you are not going to get the quality or the support should something go wrong with your unit.

When looking at ionizer quality, consider these points.

1) How accurate is the water pH level output of the unit? Since the primary health goal of alkaline water ionizers is to be able to drink water having a specific alkaline pH, how accurate is the pH measurement of the ionizer you are considering? When the unit says the water is an 8.5 pH, are you really getting 8.5? Models like the KYK Genesis have sophisticated internal computers to ensure a very accurate reading. Accuracy has a lot to do with receiving real time water flow data. Is the ionizer model you are considering able to monitor and display the exact water flow rate, ensuring accurate pH and ORP levels in your water? This is certainly something seriously worth taking a few moments to consider before buying.

2) Does the ionizer you are considering have a certification or multiple certifications from independent sources? This can provide a clue as to the type of company you are dealing with. For example the Chanson company offers ISO 9001 Certified Ionizers which is a very good thing. They have won awards and openly discuss their entire research and development process.

3) I am almost sure that you are not only interested in drinking healthy ionized alkaline water, but also making sure that the water is extremely purified. Ionizers also are water purifiers. But certainly not all water filters are created equal. The KYK Genesis offers top of the line dual filtration over 13 distinct stages. The Genesis comes with a premium activated carbon filter as well as a brand new specialized media filter to help filter out more difficult contaminants like fluoride. These filters are not only excellent quality, but will last for an extended period of time, way above average. Also some units have electronically monitored sensors that inform you exactly when to change the filters.

4) You'll want to ask how long the warranty is and what exactly does it cover? Is it a full warranty or a limited warranty? And how long will it take them fix a unit an who pays for shipping. Ionizers do not break often, but it does happen so you'll want to plan for the worst.

5) How well is the unit built? Is the ionizer built to last or will the internal parts wear out within a year or two after the warranty expires? Are the plates that create the ionized water mesh or slotted technology? Hint: Slotted plates last longer.

6) Do you want a counter top or under the counter water ionizer?

7) How does the unit get cleaned? Once again the Genesis from KYK has a fully automatic internal cleaning system. You won't have to wait for any inconvenient cleaning discharge cycles.

8) Above all, I strongly recommend that you avoid doing business with Enagic and their kangen water scam!

There are a few other features that many ionizers offer that you'll definitely want to read about, and that have not been discussed in this article. Please refer to the resource box below.

Ionic Pro Therapure 100 Compact Germicidal Air Sanitizer

Don't Bother - Richard R. Schaus - West Virginia
It is the end of July 2010 and we purchased this unit on February 3, 2010 -- LESS than 6 months ago. It is in a small bedroom and within a couple of weeks the fan made the horrific noise others have complained about in these reviews. I did the canned air thing and things seemed fine -- for a couple of months. Now the noise is back and the airflow is NON-EXISTENT -- no amount of canned air or tilting or speed changing is correcting these problems. The unit is now worthless and from I've read I won't even bother with trying to get the company to stand behind their product. I see Amazon has stopped carrying this model -- good for them.

Ionizer Air Purifier - How it Really Works

Ionizer air purifier uses an unique technology to clean and enhance indoor air quality IAQ. It attempts to clean the surrounding environment with polarity charges to entrap airborne pollutants with the help of negative ions. The machine generates high voltage to create the negative ions and they attach themselves to the airborne pollutants. The positively charged plate or needle will capture the pollutant particles. To ensure that you always clean the environment effectively, you will need to clean the plate or needle regularly.

An ionizer air purifier also helps to eliminate tiny microbes and other pollutants from with the process of ionizing the air and using electrostatic precipitation process on the pollutant particles. Although this process does not require fans, the models which do come with fans to clean more efficiently. Those with fans are made to have fans suck the air through the machine enabling the pollutants to pass through the charged plates and attach themselves to it. And at the same time, the cleaned air is drawn back out into the atmosphere.

It is important to note that while ionizer air purifiers are great for cleaning up the dust and pollen in the atmosphere thereby reducing the chances of developing allergies, they may not fair as well in the areas of getting rid of odors, gases and other chemical stench permeating around us. HEPA air cleaners using HEPA filters are recommended as the more suitable machine in this instant but than again the cost of filter replacement must be factored in as well. In fact, if you are suffering from bad allergies, or other respiratory ailments, you will benefit the most from these machines as they are capable of effectively removing the allergens in the atmosphere.

An ionizer air purifier is the most ideal device to manage indoor cleaning and you might just be able to save some money on air filter replacements too.

Colon Cleanse Recipe

So why should you be interested in a colon cleanse recipe? The body is healthy when it is in good shape both inside and out. The colon is an important part of the whole, so we must keep it working at full speed. There are pollutants and toxins that harm us without us knowing, and can get into our systems. That, coupled with bad foods we eat that are hard to digest, make it hard for the colon to stay in good shape. The colon cleanse can help the situation.

Pricy medications are not necessary for colon cleansing. The colon has the job of draining out our system, and sometimes needs help via the cleanse. There are more natural recipes out there to get the job done, avoiding an embarrassing visit to the doctor's office. When doing a homemade recipe or other method, it is important to follow the formula strictly, even though you are doing it from the comfort of our own home.

When going by the natural route of changing the diet, it is important to avoid fatty foods and include enough roughage to maintain regular cycles of bowel movement. Plentiful amounts of water also should be incorporated into the diet because this keeps the body hydrated, and also has the benefit of skin hydration- allowing it to glow.

Herbal remedies are also popular as a colon cleanse recipe, using herbs such as the aloe leaf, senna, cascara sangrada, ginger and cayenne pepper. The herbs can kill parasites, making the colon muscles stronger. A bitter plant is used in herbal remedies- this produces bile and allows bowels to move at a faster pace.

Salt Crystal Lamps - Do They Work?

According to many health experts, Himalayan salt crystal lamps offer a myriad of health benefits, but do they really work?

THE SCIENCE

From a scientific perspective, this is how salt crystal lamps work.

The atomic structure of crystal salt is bound electrically, not molecularly, and this enables the salt crystal to change back and forth from a crystalline to a liquid state.

The heat of the bulb in the salt crystal lamp creates a higher surface temperature than the surrounding air in the room. This attracts water molecules in the cooler surrounding air, resulting in condensation on the surface of the rock crystal. This process enables the electrically bound sodium chloride mineral to split into independent (positive) sodium and (negative) chloride ions.

Once the water molecules evaporate, the sodium and chloride ions revert to their crystalline mineral form. This natural ionization process takes place over and over again, invisible to the eye, and does not affect the quality of the salt crystal.

When lit by a small light bulb of 15 watt or less, a rock crystal salt lamp emits an electrical charge that releases healthy negative ions into the air. These negative ions kill bacteria, molds, mildews and spores, odors, cigarette smoke, chemical gases, pet odors, pollens, dust and dust mites, animal dander, viruses, static electricity, carbon monoxide, and much more.

NEGATIVE IONS

In nature, negative ions are created through forces of rain storms, waterfalls, lightening, sunlight, ocean waves and winds. In fresh country air, we find up to 4,000 negative ions per cubic centimeter (the size of a sugar cube).Up to 10,000 negative ions are found near heavy surf, or close to a waterfall. That is why we feel so refreshed and energized when we are near these environments.

By contrast, the number of negative ions in metropolitan areas often does not even reach 100!

Quite often, our homes are the source of many health risks. For example, many pollutants found in the air reside attach themselves to floating dust particles. In a test conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, they found 53% less dust, and 95% less bacteria, in the air by ionizing the room.

Good Housekeeping Magazine, in March 1999, had its engineers test an ionizer by using a smoke test, and found that it cleared out the smoke in a tank.

THE HEALTH BENEFITS

Health practitioners in Europe, North America, Australia and Japan have been using salt crystal lamps extensively in their treatments for ailments such as snoring, allergies, sinus problems, to reduce asthma attacks, respiratory problems and to enhance the immune system.

Our homes are full of volatile organic compounds that can seriously affect our health. For example, a 15-year study concluded that women who work at home have a 54% higher death rate from cancer than those who work away from home. This was a direct result of the increased exposure to toxic chemicals, many of which are found in common household products. Negative ions can help mitigate these volatile organic compounds.

The Environmental Protection Agency in the U.S. maintains that indoor air pollution is one of the top five threats to public health. It should come as no surprise then that many hospitals in Europe make ionization mandatory.

Without doubt, Himalayan salt crystal lamps do work. They are a very attractive feature in any house, very safe, and can be used in every room in your home. For optimal results, your salt crystal lamp should be left on as much as possible.

Alkaline Ionizer Facts - The 10 Features of a Quality Ionizer and It's Health Benefits

Image : http://www.flickr.com

An alkaline ionizer is an investment in your health so you don't want to purchase one that won't perform to your expectations and will break down in less than a year. Do your research before you buy, otherwise you may waste your money and your health.

What you need to know before you buy:

1- Only quality ionizers have "solid" titanium plates (not mesh plates). Do not buy an ionizer that has plates made of any other metal. Mesh and other metals will not hold up, leaving you at risk of consuming dangerous metals.

2- The plates should be "dipped" in platinum, not "sprayed" on. Platinum is very expensive so an alkaline ionizer with dipped plates costs more, but it is vital that the plates are dipped so that titanium is not exposed to the water as it passes through the ionizing machine.

3- Maximum plate surface area allows water to be in contact with electricity longer for a thorough charge and so the quality of your water lasts longer.

4- Check the output rate. Many ionizers will only produce a small amount of water at a time. Many shut down to protect against overheating. Do you want it to take you all day to fill up a jug of water?

5- An alkaline ionizer should not overheat! If an ionizer has an overheat protection that means it has the propensity to overheat.

6- Watts of power is HUGE in an ionizer. The highest wattage produces the best ionization.

7- The power supply should be a transformer, not SMPS (switched mode power supply). A transformer gives you a steady and consistent supply of power, giving you the same quality of water at the end of filling up a jug as at the beginning.

8- The warranty is highly important. Does the warranty protect you or the company? What service is available through the company if and when your alkaline ionizer needs servicing? Some warranties are voided if you have hard water (most of the USA does).

9- Research the company. How long have they been in business? Does the company manufacture the product itself or does it outsource the manufacturing? What companies compare their machines to other company's machines and why do you think they do this?

10- How knowledgeable is the representative? Do they truly want to answer your questions and guide you in your research or are they only telling you what you want to hear so they can make a sale?

Your health should be the biggest reason to buy an alkaline ionizer. Not only will it help you reach a desired alkaline state quickly and easily, the water it produces detoxifies and super-hydrates you with every glass. Many who drink alkaline ionized water experience radical improvements in their diabetes, arthritis, cancer, skin conditions, etc. Your health should be your top priority, so don't waste your health and money on a cheap ionizer that will not last.

Ion Audio USB Portable Tape-to-MP3 Player

Ion Audio USB Portable Tape-to-MP3 Player Starting with caveats first:

1) The cassette door's hinge is on the short side. Laws of physics would tell you - it's easier to break it. Handle with extra care.
2) The player has no speakers.
3) The battery compartment opening is inside the unit (which is very unusual). It is difficult to open since the main door doesn't open too much to leave space for you to pull the battery door. So if you have a big hand, you may crack the main door's hinge. Again, be very careful.
4) The output power is less than usual. It doesn't play loud at all. This would make sense when you're transferring tape to computer (high volume = distortion), but it may not be so good for typical listening.

The good:
1) This unit could be USB powered. Wow!
2) The unit has USB output to computer for audio capturing.
3) The software included support both Windows and MacOSX

Tip:
Due to the low power output, the audio capture must be amplified. One easy tool is Audacity. Typically, you need to amplify it to N minus 2 decibel (e.g., if Audacity's amplify option suggests 11db, you enter 9; if it suggests 6, you enter 4), then choose bass boost option (use Audacity's default). 95% of the time the results would be very loud playback capability with great mid-bass and bass, without distortion.
